District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET)s were set up as institute at  the district level after the National Policy of Education 1986 in approximately  500 districts of India for Universalisation of Elementary Education and to improve quality of elementary education. Pre-service teacher education and In-service teacher training are the major responsibilities of all DIETs.

DIETs in Delhi are run by the Govt. of Delhi which conduct a two-year Diploma Course in Elementary Teacher Education where most students are senior secondary pass out at entry level from all streams of +2 education, heterogeneous in terms of culture, language and intellectual level.

There are 100 students at DIET, Bhola Nath Nagar, Delhi. They get absorbed as primary teachers with Delhi Govt. after the completion of two-year programme on the basis of the CTET Examination. District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Bhola Nath Nagar was established as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development under the administrative control of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, as an apex body at the state level. It has been established as a pace setting institution with the objective to bring qualitative and quantitative enrichment in elementary, adult and non-formal education in the North East Distt. through conduction of research, experiments, training, material development and providing resource support.

DIET regularly conducts Pre-Service and In-Service Programme for the Heads of Schools (HoS) and teachers working in the North East District of Delhi. The whole process of Continuous Professional Development is carried out in a very scientific manner with the close cooperation of the DIET faculty and the Department of Education – MCD and the Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi.
