District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET)s were set up as institutes at the district level after the National Policy of Education, 1986 in approximately 500 districts of India for Universalisation of Elementary Education and to improve the quality of elementary education. Pre-service teacher education and In-service teacher training are the major responsibilities of all DIETs.

District Institutes of Education & Training in Delhi are run by the Government of Delhi which conducts a two-year Diploma Course in Elementary Teacher Education where most students are senior secondary pass outs at entry-level, from all streams of +2 education, heterogeneous in terms of culture, language, and cognitive level. District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Ghumanhera was established in 1998 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, under the administrative control of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, as an apex body at the state level. It has been established as a pace-setting institution with the objective to bring qualitative and quantitative enrichment in elementary, adult and, non-formal education in the South West – B district, through the conduction of research, experiments, training, material development, and providing resource support. Since its inception, DIET Ghumanhera is constantly engaged in achieving these objectives. There are 300 students, in both years, at DIET, Ghumanhera, District South West – B, Delhi. They get appointed as primary teachers Pan-India after the two-year programme on the basis of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) Examination.

DIET Ghumanhera is placed in outer Delhi, which is close to the Haryana border. The people are hardworking, straightforward, and believe in simple living and high thinking. Located amidst the pristine and peaceful nature, DIET, Ghumanhera presents the perfect place for learning. Major Dhyan Chand International Hockey Stadium in the vicinity provides ample opportunities to polish skills in field hockey. Two Senior Secondary Schools, one Primary school of the local body, one Polyclinic, and one Mohalla Clinic are just a stroll away.

This is an institute that portrays the multi-faceted personality of elementary education visionaries. The institute performs a wide range of academic activities with the idea of developing a complete personality, self-discipline, the spirit of co-operation, innovative ideas, scientific temper, and missionary zeal which are essential to education. The institute intakes 150 students per year in the Teaching of Diploma in Elementary Teacher Education.

DIET, Ghumanhera is responsible for the best innovative practices by designing a yearly calendar for ensuring planned work in the area of planning, training, research, and material development and also conducting various training programmes as planned and approved by the Advisory Committee of the DIET. DIET Ghumanhera also provides academic resources input for the district authorities and State Departments.

DIET regularly conducts Pre-Service and In-Service Programme for Heads of Schools (HoS) and teachers working in the South West – B District of Delhi. At present, DIET, Ghumanhera is catering to the training needs of, on average, more than 7000 in-service teachers. The whole process of in-service training is carried out in a very systematic manner with the close co-operation of the DIET faculty and the Department of Education – MCD and the Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Set amidst the pristine beauty of nature, DIET (South West) is one of the nine DIET’s in Delhi and was established during the session 1997-98 in DIET Rajinder Nagar. This institute shifted to its present venue in May 1998 and has the pride to be the only rural institute committed to the development of education at the elementary level. The institute is located in periphery of Delhi and is surrounded by lush green fields. Since its inception, this institute is actively involved in various activities towards the achievement of the goals of Universalisation of Elementary Education. The DIET is a step forward towards the decentralization of opportunities for professional preparation and extension of excellence. The main functions of the institute are to provide academic and professional support through Teaching-cum-Training, Research, developing Resource Material, and organizing various enrichment programs for Pre-Service and In-Service Teacher Education. The Institute has a rich history of working with the community in educational and social development in the district. Women empowerment and gender sensitization have been the major area of intervention.
