DIET Darya Ganj



District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET)s were set up as institutes at the district level after the National Policy of Education,1986 in approx. 500 districts of India for the Universalisation of Elementary Education and to improve the quality of elementary education. Pre-service teacher education and In-service teacher training are the major responsibilities of all DIETs.

DIETs in Delhi are run by the Govt. of Delhi which conducts a two-year Diploma Course in Elementary Teacher Education where most students are senior secondary pass outs at entry level, from all streams of +2 education, heterogeneous in terms of culture, language, and intellectual level. There are 120 students at DIET, Central District, Delhi. They get absorbed as primary teachers with the Delhi Govt. after the two-year programme on the basis of the CTET Examination. District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Darya Ganj was established on July 1994 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, under the administrative control of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, as an apex body at the state level. It has been established as a pace-setting institution with the objective to bring qualitative and quantitative enrichment in elementary, adult, and non-formal education in the Central district, through the conduction of research, experiments, training, material development, and providing resource support. Since its establishment, DIET Darya Ganj is constantly engaged in achieving these objectives.


DIET Darya Ganj is placed in a historical building, which earlier used to be Irwin Hospital having VIP wards. In 1938, it started functioning as the first Teacher Training Institute in Delhi, which was inaugurated by none other than the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. In 1975, the Nursery Teacher Training Course for women was started in this building.

This is an institute that captures the multi-faceted personality of elementary education visionaries. The institute performs a wide range of academic activities with the idea of developing a complete personality, self-discipline, the spirit of cooperation, innovative ideas, scientific temper, and missionary zeal which are the necessary part of studies. The institute is being run with an initial intake of 120 students, including 20 seats for the Urdu Teaching of Diploma in Elementary Teacher Education.

DIET, central is responsible for the Best Practices by designing a yearly calendar for ensuring planned work in the area of planning, training, research, and material development and also conducting the programs as planned and approved by the Advisory Committee of the DIET. DIET also provides academic resource input for the District authorities and State Departments.


DIET regularly conducts Pre-Service and In-Service Programme for Heads of Schools (HoS) and teachers working in the Central District of Delhi. The whole process of in-service training is carried out in a very scientific manner with the close cooperation of the DIET faculty and the Department of Education – MCD and the Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi.
