District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET)s were set up as institutes at the district level after the National Policy of Education,1986 in approx. 500 districts of India for Universalisation of Elementary Education and to improve quality of elementary education. Pre-service teacher education and In-service teacher training are the major responsibilities of all DIETs.
DIETs in Delhi are run by the Govt. of Delhi which conduct a two-year Diploma Course in Elementary Teacher Education where most students are senior secondary pass outs at entry level, from all streams of +2 education, heterogeneous in terms of culture, language and intellectual level. There are 150 students at DIET, Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. They get absorbed as primary teachers with Delhi Govt. after the two-year programme on the basis of the CTET Examination. District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Rajinder Nagar was established in 1988 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, under the administrative control of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, as an apex body at the state level. It has been established as a pace setting institution with the objective to bring qualitative and quantitative enrichment in elementary, adult and non-formal education in the West district, through conduction of research, experiments, training, material development and providing resource support. Since its establishment, DIET Rajinder Nagar is constantly engaged in achieving these objectives.
