“Let me light my lamp", says the star, "And never debate if it will help to remove the darkness.”
- Rabindranath Tagore
Faculty Development Program is like lighting that lamp where teachers continue to light their lamp of knowledge so that the light continuously reaches to their student. In this process, participants have gone on to motivate their students, just like the flame of one candle lights up a thousand and we feel proud of this role of SCERT.
Faculty development is a process by which faculty work systematically to improve their skills in the following area: -
- Teaching, Assessing, Research, Professionalism,
- Pedagogical Skills,
- Leadership Skills,
- Skills necessary to engage in scholarly activities,
- Personal Development,
- Professional Education and Competence,
- Improvement in educational environment significantly,
- Academic performance of learners,
- Work in group, to be part of a team and work towards a common goal, and
- Taking the best out of them.
The Faculty Development Program relies on a variety of learning settings like classrooms, workshops and seminars, and a participatory approach to learning. There is an emphasis on the case method of teaching and learning. Other educational methods such as lectures, group-exercises, games, and presentations are also used. Computers, statistical tools and audio-visual aids complement these methods. Participants are encouraged to develop insights into curriculum planning and academic administration.
"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think" – Albert Einstein. This program teaches and trains the mind to think, to reflect upon, and apply the same in our daily academic life.
As per NEP 2020 document, teachers will be given continuous opportunities for self-improvement and to learn the latest innovations and advances in their professions. SCERT, Delhi is providing ample opportunities in multiple modes through offline as well as online teacher development modules. In addition to it, SCERT, Delhi helps teachers to attend various local, regional, state, national and international workshops. Various National and International Exposure visits are organised by SCERT, Delhi to give them wide exposure and help them to learn new trends, knowledge and latest pedagogies.
NEP further states that each teacher will be expected to participate in at least 50 hours of Continuous Professional Development opportunities every year for their own professional development, driven by their own interests. SCERT, Delhi has designed various workshops for teachers to meet this target.
School leaders are also expected to participate in 50 hours or more of Continuous Professional Development modules per year covering leadership and management as well as content and pedagogy with a focus on preparing and implementing pedagogical plans based on competency-based education. For effective learning, 800 HOS of Delhi Govt. Schools have been sent to IIM Ahmedabad for leadership training.
Similar opportunities are provided to Teacher Educators of SCERT/DIET faculty e. g. Rs. 5 Lakhs is assigned to all DIETS so that they can visit institutions of their choice, for a better academic exposure. In 2021, most of the faculty members were sent to IIM Ahmedabad to improve and update their research and pedagogical skills.
“Education is a life long journey whose destination expands as you travel.” - Jim Stovall. SCERT has proved this statement true by giving opportunities to teachers to travel and explore outer world and learn new pedagogies and implement best practices in our education system. As a result, more than half of India has been explored by Mentor Teachers of Directorate of Education, Delhi which has instilled confidence and team spirit among them. They believe that attending the national exposure visits is a life changing event for them, in their personal and professional career growth. The perks of Faculty Development Programmes are many. After visit to NIE, Singapore, TDCs claimed that it was a blessing to revive their passion for teaching and know global standards and uniqueness of teaching-learning program. Teacher Educators of SCERT/DIET faculty after their visit to Cambridge and Finland affirmed it as an intellectually stimulating and enriching experience and were thankful to SCERT for providing them opportunity to be the part of such an amazing and refreshing programme. The level of dedication and commitment of SCERT faculty requires a special mention which made these programs so successful.
All teachers are got benefitted through FDP immensely. Transforming the teacher within oneself is a life-long endeavor but as we all know, a journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step and faculty development program is that single step. As said by C. S. Lewis, “You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” Hoping to see more development of teachers and students through our faculty development programs.
