On the birth anniversary of one of India’s most revered revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Delhi launched another revolution of its own - the Deshbhakti Curriculum. ‘Deshbhakti’ is a Hindi word for patriotism and ‘deshbhakt’ is a ‘patriot’. We believe that true patriotism is essentially loving all living beings and respecting our surroundings. It is a spirit of empathy, tolerance and brotherhood which is enshrined in the constitution of India.
The curriculum aims to instill the spirit of patriotism and nationhood among every child studying in Delhi Government schools and prepare them to be responsible citizens who shall contribute to nation-building, and to make students ‘true patriots’.
1. Each and every child must feel pride for the nation. Children must be taught about the glories of the country.
2. Each child must be made aware of their responsibility and duty towards the country.
3. Instill among children the commitment to be prepared to contribute and also sacrifice for the nation.
About the Curriculum
Deshbhakti Curriculum moves from themes of love and respect for the country, to identifying the strengths and challenges of the country, to reflecting on what each student can do for the country and how can each one contribute to its progress.
A K-12 citizenship curriculum which seeks to inculcate a spirit of empathy, tolerance and brotherhood which are enshrined in the Constitution of India and a sense of collective belonging in students.
The curriculum adopts a ‘Participatory Method of Learning’ that makes students partners in the process and ensures relevant and meaningful understanding for them. The method of instruction is through activities, discussions and reflection based enquiry. This will promote critical thinking, perspective building and self-reflection abilities.
